Health Benefits of Black Beans

Black beans are edible plant seeds classified as legumes. Their hard, shell-like appearance earned them the name turtle beans.

Did you know that black beans are a great source of fiber, protein, and folate? Also, they are three times cheaper than chicken, beef, or fish.

  • Provides fiber-rich diet

One known benefit of black beans is that they effectively reduce the rise of blood sugar after a meal compared to high-carb foods, such as rice and bread. It contains resistant starch, type of dietary fiber which doesn’t get broken down, preventing blood sugar level from rising. It also improves insulin sensitivity, which is beneficial for people with diabetes. The fiber-rich diet also promotes weight loss.

  • Promotes heart health

Black beans are shown to help decrease the risk of heart disease, thanks to its fiber, potassium, folate, vitamin B6, and phytonutrient content. It doesn’t contain cholesterol, making it ideal for heart health.

Additionally, black beans are a good source of quercetin that aids in cardioprotection. Quercetin is a natural anti-inflammatory which helps reduce the risk of atherosclerosis and protect against the damage caused by low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol.

  • Helps prevent cancer

Not many fruits and vegetables contain selenium, but this mineral can be found in black beans. It aids in the detoxification of cancer-causing agents in the body. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and reduces tumor growth rates.

Moreover, black beans also possess saponins, which help prevent the multiplication and spread of cancer cells throughout the body. Its fiber content reduces risk of colorectal cancer, and its high folate prevents formation of cancer cells by aiding DNA synthesis and repair.

  • Detoxifies the body

Black beans contain molybdenum, an essential micronutrient that acts as a catalyst for enzymes and aids in the breakdown of specific amino acids in the body. Thus, it has been shown to promote liver health by inhibiting pulmonary and liver fibrosis, or abnormal scarring or thickening of tissue.

Molybdenum also prevents the growth of nitrosamines, which are cancer-producing agents. It also helps the body break down sulfur, preventing sulfite sensitivity. Lastly, it helps maintain a healthy level of nitric oxide in the body, which promotes healthy blood circulation and protection of blood vessels from injury.
